Adaptation & Learning

Understanding how people learn to survive, adapt and flourish in demanding environments.

Adaptation is one of the most remarkable things human beings do. High-risk occupations develop ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that help people perform under pressure. This section explores how those adaptations are learned, why they persist, and what happens when they meet new environments such as family life, retirement or civilian work.

Why this matters

Many of the difficulties people experience during major life transitions may not be signs that something has gone wrong. They may be signs that previously successful adaptations no longer fit the present context.

Viewing change through the lens of adaptation shifts the conversation away from pathology and towards learning, context and flexibility.
